The Jacobite Piper by Mark Churms (PC)

The Jacobite Piper by Mark Churms (PC)

After the unsuccessful march on London, Prince Charlie retreats to the safety of Scotland. The army regroups and more men come to join the cause, including soldiers from France. However King Georges men are never far away. As dark, winter rain clouds draw in over the high ground above the town of Falkirk, the Jacobite army assembles to face Hang-man Hawleys dragoons and infantry. A piper plays on while the men of Ogilvys Regiment, in the second line, load and make ready their weapons for the coming assault. Bonnie Prince Charlie (so called for his nature, not his looks) rides down the ranks followed by Lord Elcho and his Life Guards. Red coated Irish Pickets, regulars from France, are also in reserve.

Battle of Bosworth by Brian Palmer. (PC)

Battle of Bosworth by Brian Palmer. (PC)

In 1485, the Lancastrian contender for the throne of England, Henry Tudor, sailed from France with a small force of mainly continental mercenaries determined to wrestle the crown from Richard III. Gathering many supporters along the way he eventually arrived at Bosworth with an army numbering 5000 against Richards 8000. Things began well enough for Richard but it became apparent during the battle that the neutral Stanley Brothers, Sir William Stanley and Lord Thomas Stanley and their men who had remained on the sidelines, had elected to fight for Henry. Richard charged for Henry in person but was overwhelmed and killed. He was the last English King to die in battle. Although not the final battle of the War of the Roses, the victory for Henry at Bosworth secured the crown and began the Tudor dynasty.

Men of Sparta by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

Men of Sparta by Ivan Berryman. (PC)

The Spartan army stood at the centre of the Spartan state, citizens trained in the disciplines and honour of a warrior society. Subjected to military drills since early manhood, the Spartans became one of the most feared and formidable military forces in the Greek world, attaining legendary status in their wars against Persia. At the height of Sparta's power – between the 6th and 4th centuries BC – other Greeks commonly accepted that: one Spartan was worth several men of any other state

Rorkes Drift 22nd January 1879 - Defending the Store House by Jason Askew. (PC)

Rorkes Drift 22nd January 1879 - Defending the Store House by Jason Askew. (PC)

By about 6pm the Zulu attacks had extended all around the front of the post, and fighting raged at hand-to-hand along the mealie-bag wall. Lieutenant Chard himself took up a position on the barricade, firing over the mealie-bags with a Martini-Henry, whilst Lieutenant Bromhead directed any spare men to plug the gaps in the line. The men in the yard and on the front wall were dangerously exposed to the fire of Zulu marksmen posted in the rocky terraces on Shiyane (Oskarsberg) hill behind the post. Several men were hit, including Acting Assistant Commissary Dalton, and Corporal Allen of the 14th. Surgeon Reynolds treated the wounded as best he could despite the fire. Once the veranda at the front of the hospital had been abandoned, the Zulus had mounted a determined attack on the building itself, setting fire to the thatched roof with spears tied with burning grass. The defenders were forced to evacuate the patients room by room, eventually passing them out through a small window int.........

Storming the Heights at Badajos by Stanley Wood (PC)

Storming the Heights at Badajos by Stanley Wood (PC)

One of the bloodiest battles of the Napoleonic Wars was the Siege of Badajos (16 of March - 6th of April 1812). Wellingtons army faced off against a garrison of 5000 French soldiers in Badajos, Spain. The French forces were outnumbered 5 to 1 by the British, who had a force of 27,000 troops and 52 guns. However heavy fortifications and fierce fighting made the victory at Badajos, a very costly one with the British taking over 4700 casualties. Image taken from original book plates published in 1915.

General von Scharnhorst Wounded at Grossgorschen - May 2nd, 1813 By Carl Rochling (PC)

General von Scharnhorst Wounded at Grossgorschen - May 2nd, 1813 By Carl Rochling (PC)

The Battle of Littzen (also known as Grossgorschen) took place near the town of Littzen in Saxony, present-day Germany. The battle involved a coalition army primarily composed of Russian and Prussian forces facing against Napoleons army. The battle began in the early morning, the fighting was intense and chaotic with significant troop movements and cavalry charges on both sides. Key locations, like the village of Liitzen changed hands multiple times. Napoleons army would claim victory after a coalition retreat but it would be very costly with significant casualties. Seen here is the great Prussian general Gerhard von Scharnhorst after beng wounded inthe battle, the wound would be minor however the hasty retreat would prevent proper medical treatment and he would die to infection.

Declaration of Victory after the Battle of Leipzig on 18th of October 1813 by Johann Peter Krafft (PC)

Heavily outnumbered, Napoleon was eventually defeated at Leipzig after several days of intense fighting. The Battle led to a French retreat from Germany and eventually, Napoleon's abdication in 1814. It would be the largest battle during the Napoleonic wars, involving over 500,000 soldiers.
